Our Story

At the beginning...

Sail along the water to discover the evolutions of Batorama since the birth of the autonomous port of Strasbourg in 1937!

1930

Very first visits to the basins of the Port Autonome de Strasbourg, intended for professionals looking to set up their business.

1937

Acquisition of the river boat Paris from the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life.

1947

Launch of visits to the Port Autonome de Strasbourg aboard the Paris opened to the general public. 10,250 passengers are accommodated. This boat marks the first river journeys on the Rhine.

The cruise was then confined to the basins of the Port du Rhin and aimed to explore the infrastructure and industries of the port.

1954

Commissioning of a twin-deck boat, enabling us to offer cruises with refreshments and music on the Rhine. 6,939 guests took advantage of the offer in the first year alone.

1957

THE ERA OF MODERNIZATION

The boat tour business is expanded to take in Strasbourg city centre thanks to the boat Charles Frey. 8,443 visitors take advantage of these tours.

This Dutch launch, adapted to urban navigation conditions, offers a whole new experience — between architecture and heritage, a journey through the centuries.

1976-80

The fleet continued to expand to 4 Dutch tourist-type launches, transporting 168,000 passengers on an urban cruise.

The audio commentaries were then broadcast using loudspeakers.

1986

Construction of the first bespoke tour boat at Molenaar’s shipyard in Zaandam (Netherlands). It is named the Rouget de Lisle in tribute to the author of the Marseillaise - the French national anthem - composed in Strasbourg on 25 April 1792.

Custom-built for the activity, with a low air draft and shallow draft, it can pass under bridges while navigating in shallow waters. This period also marks the introduction of audio headphones—a notable improvement for passenger comfort and language personalization, as commentary had previously been broadcast over loudspeakers.

Between 1986 and 2000, six more boats would be added to the fleet.

1988

Visit of Pope John Paul II to Strasbourg, where he borrowed the vessel Strasbourg to visit the Port and to sail on the Rhine.

2000

EXPANSION AND INNOVATIONS

Batorama takes an ecological turn with the launch of Gustave Doré, the first hybrid sightseeing boat with electric propulsion and the largest of its kind in Europe.

2011

Batorama accommodates 795,000 passengers that year.

2013

A river berth is inaugurated at the foot of the Louise-Weiss Building, the site of the chamber of the European Parliament, in the context of an unprecedented partnership. The city centre can now be reached by boat in only 17 minutes from the European institutions.

2014

A leap into the heart of the European capital becomes possible a year later with the inauguration of the new landing stage at the European Parliament and the direct link from the city centre.

2016

Batorama, until that time under the direction of the Port Autonome de Strasbourg, becomes an SAS (simplified joint-stock company).

Launch of the first studies for the Caravelle scheme, the plan to decarbonise the fleet dedicated to visits to the city centre.

2017

  • DUCK RACE – 70 YEARS OF BATORAMA. Batorama is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a major event.

  • Conversion of the entire fleet to GTL Marine fuel (GTL = Gas-to-Liquid), which is more environmentally friendly.

Since 2020

  • ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION AND LOCAL COMMITMENT. Mindful of its environment and the resources required for its operations, Batorama has been intensifying its energy transition efforts by reducing CO₂ emissions since 2020.

  • Development of a new theme cruise deal intended for local audiences: show cruises, tastings and fun trips for our younger audience.

2023

The Alsace Excellence label is awarded to Batorama for our social and environmental commitment. This label is a distinction awarded to ethical, socially responsible, efficient and innovative companies.

2023

2024

  • Commissioning of the Strasbourg, the first 100% electric boat in the Caravelle series. This decarbonised vessel, equipped with a terrace deck, removable windows and an immersive multimedia system, adds greater depth to the river cruise experience.
  • The company continues to strengthen its partnerships with local producers to expand its beer-themed tasting cruises. And the icing on the kougelhopf: little ones now have their own kids’ cruises, offering a rich program of fun and educational activities.
